Needle Felting

Needle felting is the process of matting wool fibers together to create a solid 3D object or appliqué design. There are a variety of needles designed to work with different wools or for different purposes. Needles can be used in a cluster with a handle for more speedy work, or individually for more detailed work. I prefer using a single needle of medium size for my paintings. I use Merino Cross, New Zealand Corriedale and some silk and raw fibers for my paintings. They are usually pre-dyed. My backing is usually craft felt, though I have needle felted onto cotton and burlap with some interesting results.
